El Niño reshapes travel risk across the globe. Destinations that are normally perfect in December-February can become flood zones, drought-stricken fire risks, or storm-battered coastlines. If you are booking winter travel, factor El Niño into your destination choice.
Destinations to Reconsider
Peru and Ecuador (Flood Risk)
El Niño's ground zero. Coastal Peru and Ecuador face extreme rainfall and flooding. Machu Picchu access can be disrupted by mudslides. The January-February peak season coincides with the worst weather window. Alternative: Colombia's coffee region — higher elevation, less flood risk, equally rich culture.
California Coast (Storm and Mudslide Risk)
Highway 1 closures from mudslides are common during El Niño winters. Coastal towns face flooding. Ski resorts benefit from heavy snow but access roads may close. Alternative: Arizona and New Mexico — desert winter is pleasant, no El Niño flood risk.
Indonesia and Southern Thailand (Drought and Haze)
El Niño brings drought to Southeast Asia. Water shortages, haze from peat fires, and reduced waterfall flow affect the tourist experience. Bali's dry season extends, which is normally good — but extreme drought stresses water resources. Alternative: Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) — cooler, less drought-affected.
Northeast Australia (Drought and Heat)
Queensland faces extreme heat and drought during El Niño. The Great Barrier Reef faces additional bleaching risk from already-warm waters. Alternative: New Zealand's South Island — El Niño brings stronger westerlies but no extreme drought.
Destinations That Benefit
Southern Brazil and Uruguay
Increased rainfall greens the landscapes. Iguazu Falls is at maximum flow during El Niño. Beach weather remains excellent.
Southern California Interior
Palm Springs and Joshua Tree get mild winter weather without coastal flood risk. Desert wildflower blooms may be spectacular if rains arrive.
The Alps
El Niño winters tend to bring near-normal snowfall to the European Alps. Better bet than North American ski resorts in the northern tier.
