La Niña 2027

The 2026 El Niño is still strengthening — but the question everyone is already asking is what happens after it peaks. Here's what history and the models suggest about a possible La Niña in 2027.

Will La Niña Follow El Niño 2026?

It's too early for a definitive forecast, but the historical odds lean toward it. Strong El Niño events are frequently followed by a La Niña the following year — the warm phase dumps heat out of the tropical Pacific, the ocean overshoots cold, and the cycle flips. The 2026 event is forecast to peak at Super El Niño strength (NOAA gives a 63% chance), and if it does, a 2027 La Niña becomes the base-case expectation rather than a coin flip.

What we can say now: the Oceanic Niño Index sits at +1.39°C (May-July 2026), the event is still strengthening, and its peak is most likely in the November-January window. Whether a La Niña develops in 2027 — and how strong it gets — depends on how fast the warm water discharges after that peak.

What History Shows

2015-16+2.62016-17Weak La Niña (ONI −0.8)

The pattern is consistent but not universal. Every Super El Niño of the modern era was followed by at least weak La Niña conditions. The one caveat: the 2026 event follows an unusually short gap after the previous La Niña (the shortest since 1963), and back-to-back rapid flips can behave differently. Still, "El Niño then La Niña" is the base case, not the tail risk.

What a 2027 La Niña Would Mean

La Niña is the cold phase of ENSO — it produces roughly opposite effects to El Niño. If a La Niña develops in 2027, the typical pattern is:
