How El Niño Changes Your City's Winter
The "southern US gets wet, northern US gets warm" rule is a generalization. What actually happens in your city depends on latitude, proximity to the coast, elevation, and which jet stream configuration dominates. Here is the city-level breakdown.
West Coast
Los Angeles, CA
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 130-160% of normal. El Niño is LA's wet season engine. Expect 15-20 inches of seasonal rain vs the 12-inch normal. Atmospheric river events are the biggest risk — a single AR can dump a season's worth of rain in 48 hours.
San Francisco, CA
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 125-150% of normal. The Bay Area is even more exposed to atmospheric rivers than LA. Mudslide risk in recent burn scars is elevated.
Seattle, WA
Temperature: +2-4F above normal. Rain: 75-85% of normal. Seattle actually gets a break during El Niño winters — warmer and drier than average.
Portland, OR
Temperature: +2-3F above normal. Rain: 80-90% of normal. Similar to Seattle but less pronounced. The Cascade snowpack is typically below normal.
Southwest
Phoenix, AZ
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 120-140% of normal. El Niño increases winter rain in the desert. January-February wildflower displays may be exceptional.
Denver, CO
Temperature: Near normal to slightly above. Snow: Near normal. Denver's elevation and continental position weaken the El Niño signal. Variability is high.

Temperature: +3-5F above normal. Snow: 60-80% of normal. Lake-effect snow is reduced because the polar jet weakens and shifts north.
Minneapolis, MN
Temperature: +4-7F above normal. Snow: 50-70% of normal. Minneapolis sees the most dramatic El Niño warming of any major US city.

Houston, TX
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 130-150% of normal. Flood risk is elevated. The subtropical jet delivers repeated heavy rain events.
New Orleans, LA
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 130-150% of normal. Similar to Houston with added storm surge risk.
Atlanta, GA
Temperature: Near normal. Rain: 120-140% of normal. Tornado risk is slightly elevated during El Niño winters in the Southeast.
Northeast
New York, NY
Temperature: +2-4F above normal. Snow: 60-80% of normal. Fewer nor'easters during El Niño because the storm track stays south.
Boston, MA
Temperature: +2-4F above normal. Snow: 60-80% of normal. Similar to New York but coastal storms can still deliver occasional heavy snow.
