Why Prepare Now
The 2023-2024 El Niño caught millions off guard — flooded homes in California, mudslides in Peru, drought-driven wildfires in Australia. The 2026 El Niño is projected to reach strong-to-super intensity by winter 2026-2027. The window for preparation is now.

Flood Protection
Standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover flood damage. You need a separate flood insurance policy, typically through the NFIP. There is a 30-day waiting period — do not wait until a flood warning is issued.
Elevate valuable items to upper floors. Install sewer backflow prevention valves if you are in a flood zone. A battery-powered backup sump pump is essential.
72-Hour Countdown
When NOAA issues a storm or flood watch: charge all devices, fill gas tank, bring outdoor furniture indoors, fill bathtub with water, turn refrigerator to coldest setting, withdraw cash, review evacuation route with family.
