As of mid-2026, ENSO conditions are transitioning from neutral toward a weak La Niña state. The key indicators: the ONI (Oceanic Niño Index) has dropped below -0.3°C, and subsurface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific show a clear cooling trend. The probability of La Niña developing by late 2026 stands at approximately 55-60% — not a certainty, but strong enough to start planning for its effects.

What the Models Say

The NMME (North American Multi-Model Ensemble) shows a 55-65% probability of La Niña thresholds being met by October-November 2026. The European model (ECMWF) is slightly more cautious at 50-55%. The spread between models is larger than usual because the initial conditions are ambiguous — we're coming off a strong El Niño in 2024-25, and ENSO transitions are inherently harder to predict than persistent states.

Expected Strength: Weak to Moderate

Most models agree this will be a weak to moderate event, not a strong La Niña like 2010-11 or 2020-21. The forecast ONI values cluster around -0.8°C to -1.2°C — enough to have real climate impacts, but not record-breaking. Global Impacts to Watch

A weak La Niña still shifts rainfall patterns globally. For North America specifically: La Niña winters typically bring colder and wetter conditions to the Pacific Northwest, warmer and drier to the southern US, and more snowfall in the Midwest and Northeast compared to El Niño or neutral conditions.

Key Differences from a Strong La Niña

Weak La Niña events produce less dramatic impacts than strong ones. The Pacific Northwest will see some cooling and precipitation, but not the extreme flooding of strong La Niña winters. The Atlantic hurricane season sees some enhancement, but the effect is muted. The main risk with weak La Niña forecasting is over-interpretation — mild signals shouldn't be treated as strong ones.
